SGA’s Garden Product Guide

The product here is derived from the research conducted in compiling the Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA) Garden Product Guide- Safe for You ‘n’ Nature.  SGA, in conjunction with the University of Melbourne (Burnley), has developed a rating system for garden chemicals, fertilisers and soil conditioners based on their safety for humans and the environment.  SGA’s website has an audience of up to 130,000 readers each month and, as a not-for-profit organisation, SGA provides significant research-based information that people can trust. In our ongoing research evaluating all gardening products available to the general public in Australia, we have:

  • Verified their safety and impacts using current research findings.
  • Rated over 1,000 garden products according to a 6 Star rating system.

We are in the process of preparing this information for publication.

Where does the information come from?

  • New products and changes to existing garden products are identified through manufacturer/distributor websites or notification from their representatives.
  • Regulatory poison schedule ratings, such as the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP) rating are derived from the material safety data sheet (MSDS).
  • Information about the active ingredients in a product is also sourced from the MSDS.
  • The critical environmental and safety rating information that determines ecotoxicity, such as soil mobility, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity to non-target organisms is derived from authoritative sources such as government departments, international research organisations and current scientific research publications.

How Can This Information Help You and Your Organisation?

As far as we know, SGA’s Garden Product Guide is the only source of low environmental impact garden product information in Australia, conveniently organised into categories for your reference.

The 6 star-rated products are listed on the website and you can use them for:

  • Planning your product ranges, placing your orders, or designing garden maintenance spraying and feeding regimes.
  • Building your environmental brand – it costs no more to garden sustainably with low environmental impact products and wins customers.

SGA is in the final stages of making the full Garden Product Guide available as a web app which will be available free of charge to Green Gardening Professionals members.  It will list all commercially available garden products with their star ratings and information on their safety and environmental impacts.  It is proposed to eventually have links to the MSDSs.
