Understanding what your plants grow in is essential to their long-term health and productivity. In this one-hour online master class, you’ll learn the key differences between garden soil, compost and potting mix, and why feeding your soil is fundamental to successful gardening. Whether you’re new to the topic or simply need a refresher, this session will give you the confidence to make informed choices about the materials you use.

Guided by experienced hands-on gardener Teresa Day, you’ll explore:

• What soil is made of and the factors that affect its performance as a plant home

• What compost is, and the various types you can make or purchase

• How potting mix is formulated, including grades and common ingredients

• A range of natural amendments – such as bark, coconut coir, vermiculite, perlite, rice hulls, seaweed, sand and horticultural pumice – and how they support soil and plant health

• Sustainability considerations when choosing materials

• Personal safety issues to keep in mind when handling soil products

This practical and accessible session will help you choose the right growing media and amendments for your garden with confidence.
