Maintaining Indigenous Gardens – Pruning, Trimming, Watering, and Nourishing

Australia’s unique ecology means our indigenous plants, including native grasses, sedges, and dense ground covers, are unlike any others. So, traditional gardening plant care techniques can often be ineffective or even harmful. Yet doing nothing isn't really an option either.

In this one-hour Master Class session, you’ll learn how to properly maintain these distinctive plants. Margaret Allan will guide you through the best practices for maintaining the health of indigenous plants, offering expert insights into how their needs differ from those of traditional garden plants. Special attention will be given to grasses, sedges, and groundcovers—plants that require a different approach to care, from watering and mulching to trimming and general maintenance.

The session will cover:

  • Removing biomass from grasses
  • Trimming groundcovers
  • Foliage care and pruning hardy indigenous shrubs
  • Watering and feeding indigenous plants

Beyond basic maintenance, you'll also explore how to recognize plant life cycles, when plants have completed their life cycle, and how to support their self-propagation. This session will help you nurture your garden in a way that promotes natural regeneration and sustainability.

This session is part of a three part series called “Nurturing Indigenous Gardens”. Other topics include  ‘Ecological Garden Design: Lessons From the Bush’ and ‘Beyond plants - what else to include’.  Book the Series Package for discount.
