Dianella sp

(Flax Lily)

Description: An indigenous alternative to Agapanthus might be a Dianella species from your local area. Dianella are hardy, long-lived plants that grow especially well in dry shade, where it can be difficult to grow almost any plant. They form clumps with leaves between 30cm and 1.5m tall, depending on the species. They’re tough and put on a gorgeous display with masses of purple and yellow flowers through spring, summer and autumn. The flowers are followed by bright purple berries - very obvious on the species D. caerulea. This species naturally occurs along the Eastern Seaboard. At least one species of Dianella is found naturally in every state and territory of Australia. Visit your local SGA nursery for details.
