Sustainable Parks and Gardens

Recommended Number of Participants - 30 plus

From 2003 to 2007, SGA ran the very successful Green Gardeners program that was attended by approximately 2,500 professional horticulturists and landscapers. This course was an introduction to sustainable horticulture for many in the garden industry. Many local government staff also availed of the training.

In recognition of the need for ongoing environmental training for workers employed in public and private gardens, SGA has redesigned the Green Gardeners training and developed a more intensive training program for participants in the industry. This course is offered to local government to provide ongoing professional training to their parks and gardens employees. It will presume some prior knowledge of sustainable principles from the participants.

This professional training package is a 9 hour training course that can run either as

  • 3 hour weekly workshops over 3 consecutive weeks (day or evening) or

  • 4 1/2 hour weekday workshops on 2 consecutive weeks.

Topics are covered in depth by qualified SGA presenters and include;

  • SOILS - Structure and improvement; organic recycling; fertilisers; compost and mulch.

  • PLANT HEALTH - Diagnosing problems; pest and disease control; cultural management.

  • PLANT SELECTION - Native and drought tolerant plants; indigenous plants and provenance; lawns and native grasses; environmental weeds.

  • WATER RESOURCES - Water sources and options; water-wise garden design; soil water retention and amendments; efficient irrigation systems and effective watering cycles.

  • RESOURCE USE - Sourcing of products; sustainable harvesting; recycled products; life cycle assessment and embodied energy.

Note: SGA would encourage a number of local governments to collaborate on this training and share the cost of the course.
