Upcoming Weed Declarations

June 2007

A further six plant species are intended to be prohibited from sale and trade throughout Victoria later this year under changes to the State's declared noxious weeds list.

Plant species that have been proposed for declaration under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994, the Victorian legislation of relevance to noxious weed declaration and management, are:

Cytisus multiflorus (White Spanish broom)
Nassella hyalina (Cane needle-grass)
Nassella leucotricha (Texas needle-grass)
Sagittaria graminea (Arrowhead)
Spartium junceum (Spanish broom)
Vinca major (Blue periwinkle)

These plants have been identified as priorities for action within Catchment Management Authority Regional Weed Action Plans due to the serious threat they pose to Victoria's primary production, Crown land, environment and community health.

Each plant has been assessed, as part of phase 2 of the noxious weeds review process, for its invasiveness, present distribution, potential distribution and impact. The assessment information for all of these plants, and further details on the noxious weeds review process, can be viewed on the Victorian Resources Online website, www.dpi.vic.gov.au/vro.

As declaration of these plants is expected to come into effect later this year, businesses are advised to begin clearing any existing stock they currently hold. Once these plants are declared it will be illegal to buy, sell, possess for sale, display, plant or propagate, bring into or transport them around Victoria without a permit.

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and SGA will keep you informed as to when the plants are to be officially declared.
