Traditionally in Australia urban growth has sprawled into high conservation value areas creating disturbance and introducing a huge range of invasive plants. According to the CSIRO 2004 "Jumping the Garden Fence' report 65% of environmental weeds have originated from the horticulture industry.

In Victoria SGA is working with Parks Victoria support to raise awareness amongst plant lovers of the value of our Parks as a conserver of our unique indigenous plants and discourage the sale of invasive plants that threaten the biodiversity of our parks.

The following common garden plants can be invasive in our parks and reserves that protect our unique native flora and fauna. Please check the plant list below before you buy plants for your garden. Please do not plant any of these potential garden escapees in your garden and do you bit for the environment. You can make a difference.
