What's the deal with invasive plants?

There are thousands of wonderful garden plants available that do not threaten our unique Australian ecosystems. There are some that we definitiely need to avoid as they very effectively escape and take over our natural areas. It is often difficult for the gardener to know what is an invasive plant and what plants are OK. SGA is in the process of developing individual information sheets below on various invasive plants that we will gradually build up over time. Many local councils also have excellent brochures on plants that are a problem in your local area.

SGA certified garden centres can help.

In addition, Sustainable Garden Centres ensure they have no plants that have been declared illegal to sell (Noxious or Decalred weeds). These retail nurseries also work with SGA to remove from sale the worst invasive plants in their local area. Nurseries can legally sell these plants, but in the interests of helping to protect our natural areas, Sustainable Garden Centres choose to remove them from sale. Your support of these businesses who are prepared to take an environmental stand is appreciated.

Each month in our Cuttings newsletter we will highlight an 'Invasive Plant of the Month' that provides you with information about specific problem plants. In addition SGA is working with local government to start building a list garden escapes on a municipality basis. Below are a list of the invasive plants that have already appeared.
