Pots

The environmental impacts of garden pots are bigger than you might think.

Transport

Many pots are manufactured overseas which means several methods of transport have been used to get them to you, including road, rail and shipping. The further a pot has traveled, the more its transport has contributed to pollution, the greenhouse effect and depleting nonrenewable resources. Locally made pots generally have the least impact on the environment, whilst those made in other parts of Australia or overseas have a proportionately bigger impact.

Energy

Ceramic pots are fired using gas (least damaging), coal or wood/rice husks (most damaging). The type of energy used to fire a pot generally depends on where it is from. You can make a pretty good guess at which pot came from where, and so how it was produced:

ITALY

Gas-fired, high quality terracotta pots

CHINA

Gas fired, fully glazed pots(some coal and oil)

MALAYSIA

Gas-fired, glazed pots with raw rims

INDONESIA & VIETNAM

Woodfired, unglazed pots

Locally made pots have the least transport costs in terms of pollution, contributing to the greenhouse effect and using non-renewable resources.
