Have you ever wanted to learn how to make things for your garden, how to use hand tools or how to reuse wooden pallets as a building material?  Following on from our successful Sustainable Building Materials Master Class we are pleased to be able to bring you a Construction Master Class on Building Veggie Growing Boxes from used / reclaimed  wooden pallets.

In this Construction Master Class where you will learn about:

  • How to source used timber pallets
  • Using hand tools safely
  • How to breakdown timber pallets to basic building materials
  • Veggie box design options
  • Build a Veggie Growing Box (approx. 1,100 mm square)

Workshop participants will be split into teams of 3 or 4 to build the Veggie Boxes.

If you are interested in buying one of the boxes made on the day, please email me at r.rowe@sgaonline.org.au to register your interest.  Money raised by selling the boxes will go to the students of Templestowe College to buy additional resources for their permaculture / garden projects and unsold boxes will be integrated into the garden. If you want to buy a box, you will need to take it home on the day and they will be approx. 1,100 mm square.

  1. I live in WA and would like to know if you will put this information on your website?

    • Unfortunately, it is not as simple as putting the information on the website. The class is a practical demonstration and engagement in building veggie beds. We will, however, see if the presenter can provide some written instructions which are comprehensive enough to put on the website.

  2. I need to remake my vege box. To prevent the weeds taking over. would pond liner be useful?

    • Lining the sides and some of the base is a good idea as it will also reduce the amount of water lost through the sides of the box. A woven material on the base or a solid film with drainage holes in it would work okay. Controlling weeds around the base with a spray using white vinegar will also help. Just put it in an old window cleaning or similar ‘trigger’ bottle.

  3. Building Veggie Beds from Pallets – Construction Master Class 12 Nov 2017

Are there more of these workshops planned in future? I can’t do this particular workshop date as will be overseas and this is EXACTLY what I need to learn atm!

    • There may be in 2018, depending on the presenter’s availability. Unfortunately, class sizes are limited because it involves construction. Please keep checking our website calendar.
